10 Things I Hate About You :
- In the opening of the film sea are introduced to the more cheerful and happy girls travelling as a group in a blue car and on the other side we can see a girl travelling alone to school in her red car (she looks quite grumpy)
- The guidance counsellor Ms.Perky in her self symbolises binary oppositions because she is the complete opposite to the definition of her job - we see this through her pinky pearly clothes. Usually a counsellor would be more serious.
- There are also different groups of people in the college that we are introduced to by the geeky guy. These groups are the coffee kids, white rustas, cowboys, the more serious students that aim to have a bright future, beautiful girls. All the different characters hang around together which shows the audience that conflict may occur in the movie between these groups.
- Lively pop music is playing in the car when the group of girls come towards the traffic light and then their music is cut off when the grumpy girl pulls up beside them listening to rock music. This shows that she is weird and the other girls do not agree with her

In the film Romeo & Juliet we are introduced to two boy groups who express and represent the oppositions within their families.
- White American
- Associated with light/bright colours
- Cowardy/nervous
- Yellow convertible car
- Represents peace
- Casual Hawaiian shirts
- Not groomed
- Big and bulky/ chubby
- Jewellery - Dog tags/chains
- Latin American
- Associated with dark/cool/electric colours
- Powerful/brave/strong
- Electric blue smart car (not convertible)
- Smart suits and shirts with cowboy boots (silver/metal heels)
- Groomed / clean shaved
- Fit and muscular bodies
- Jewellery - gold bling
There are different sounds played when the two groups appear on the scene which helps distinguish the oppositions. For example when the Montague's are shown the music played in the background is up beat and hip hop like music. However when the Capulet's arrive at the petrol station we hear a loud disturbing engine sound and then cowboy themed music played as they are stepping out the car. This shows that they have come to cause trouble and disrupt the environment.
Grease
In the opening of Grease we are introduced to two groups one of which are made of boys and the other of girls. We see the separation of sexuality and the conflict that is going to be caused between these two groups because of the way they are dressed etc.
Boy group :
- name of the group = T-Birds
- associated with the colour black
- all wearing leather jackets with name written on the back
- they arrive in a blue car
- smoking
- they are rebels
Girl Group :
- name of the group = Pink Ladies (very stereotypical)
- associated with the colour pink
- all wearing pink satin jackets with name written on the back
- they arrive in a pink car
- they are very vain (bad girls)

- dressed in long pastel colour skirts and shirts
- they look very smart and mature
- arrive to school by walking
- books and folders in hand
