BMW 633 csiIn the beginning, Claire Standish is being dropped off in this car. In the 1980's this car would be considered expensive and only owned by those who made a decent earning. This car symbolises that the owners are rich and most likely look down on people. This is confirmed by the films 'Princess' stepping out of the car. Before getting out of the car she whines to her dad about having detention to which he hands her a present. She then exits the car in a huff wearing nice clothes. Her appearance and attitude suggests that she is rich and spoiled which is reinforced by the car that her dad is driving.
Dodge Aries K
This car was typically owned in the 80's by people in the middle working class. It gives the impression that the owners are not rich and need to work to get by. The person that leaves this car is the brain; Brian Johnson. His mother dropped him off and moaned at him to find any way to study, even though realistically he can't. He coheres to the stereotype of having a 'geeky' appearance by being skinny, wearing unstylish clothes and having a weird hair cut.
Andrew Clark arrives in this car with his father. This is another typical working class car. It gives the impressions that they have money; just not enough to spend on great luxuries. This is backed up by the father moaning at Andrew about getting detention as it may mess up his chances of getting a football scholarship. He wears a sports jacket and trainers which shows that he is a jock.

Allison Reynolds is dropped off in this car, presumably by her father. This car is normal of a 80's working American which shows that the families income is average. There is no dialogue between Allison and her father which gives the impression that he doesn't care; even though she tries to talk to him. He drives off and leaves her watching him drive away. What happens in this short scene explains why she is dubbed the 'basket case'.
The criminal, John Bender, walks to the school without anyone with him. Rather than show that his family is poor, it possibly shows that no one in his family cares about him. He walks in front of the Allison's car without even looking which gives the impression that he doesn't care what people think and doesn't follow the rules. It makes him look like a criminal who is purposely alone.
