A title sequence will appear in the beginning of the film where it introduces all the characters and people involved in the making of the film. The title sequence is contractual and the order of the names are decided by the lawyers and the agents.
The title sequence always starts with the production company and distribution company. After they appear, we are introduced to the name of the film and then the characters and other people involved in the film. However there is an exception that some films like to put the main characters names before the title of the movie to sell the film through the characters rather than the title of the movie. The names of the characters that appear before the title are usually very famous and well known in the film industry. Another exception is with the directors. If a director is and 'auteur' their name may also be before the movie title because they are known for producing other successful films. Finally the title sequence starts and ends with the most important people in the making of the film for example the writer, producer and director.
Production and distribution company shown before the title of the movie; The Pacific. After the title, the names of the actors and actresses in the film are shown collectively which suggests that the film title is more important than anyone who is acting in it. The makers of the film are relying on the title selling itself. The beginning also follows the conventional order of a title sequence. The middle of the title sequence includes the names of people involved with:
Visual/special effects supervisor
Casting
Music
Editing
Costume design
Production designer
Director of photography
Supervisor producers
Showing their names in the middle of the title sequence suggests that even though they contributed to making the film, they are not as important as those featured in the beginning and end of the sequence. Putting the names in the middle means that the audience will be less likely to remember their names. The names that are shown at the end are the: producers, co-executive producers, executive producers, the writer and the director. Famous producers such as Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks are shown towards the end to ensure that the audience remembers their names. Overall, The Pacific fits the conventions for a title sequence.
The title sequence for the movie the Man of Steel. Unlike the previous film, Man of Steel does not completely follow the conventional order for a title sequence. The beginning is normal; the names of the production and distribution company are shown. Then, unusually, the name of the director, Zack Snyder, is shown next. In a normal title sequence the directors name normally comes last. It stresses the importance of the director and shows that the film is focusing on him to sell the film. Next to appear in the title sequence is the name of the main actor/actress starring in the film which suggests that they are important in the film. After is the names of the less important actors/actresses in the film with the names grouped together. However, Russell Crowe's names is shown separately just after even though he is famous which shows that he doesn't make a significant contribution to the film but because of his status is featured separate to the other actors/actresses.
In the middle of the title sequence, the names of the less important people involved in the film are shown. They are the people involved with: costume design, visual effect, music, co-producer, film editor, production designer and the director of photography. Their names are unlikely to be remembered. Towards the end of the sequence, the names of those greatly involved in the film are shown to signify how important they are. They are the:
Executive producers
Producers
Creators of Superman
After their names, the directors name is shown again. Showing his name twice reinforces that the film is selling based on his name and contribution. Finally, the title is shown. The symbolic S is highlighted and elaborated by itself to show that the film is from the Superman series. Then the main title Main of Steel is given a grand entrance and is emphasised as the title of the film.
