Travelling & Arriving The Breakfast Club & Own Film Transport

The Breakfast Club

In the opening of the Breakfast Club (first 5-6 minutes) we are introduced to the key characters. Each character travels and arrives in a different way which helps us spot the difference between the characters and their personalities.

The Princess
This character is known to be the popular girl and the one that gets the most attention. She is conveyed as a rich girl as she arrives in a BMW with her father. Having a BMW in those days seemed as luxury which suggests that she lives in a quite comfortable family. Although her father knows she has a Saturday detention he hands her a present which is unusual for someone who is in trouble, this emphasises that she is spoilt and may be the only child. She is associated with mainly pink/girly colours. She is the first to travel in a car and arrive in the opening scene of the movie therefore this suggests that she is a main character and quite important.

The Brain
This character is known as the nerd of the group which links in with his nickname 'The Brain'. He arrives after the Princess in a normal family car with his little sister and his mother which suggests that he is a mummy's boy and that his parents care about him. Although he is travelling in a car he does not seem as rich as the Princess this is symbolised through the model of their car. The fact that he is cared for is also conveyed through the speech of his mother because she is moaning at him for having detention and wants him to do well.

The Athlete
This character is the sporty one who is known to be the jock like character in the movie. He also arrives in a car with his father, his father is also concerned about his scholarship and how it is going to be affected by this detention. The Athlete and his father travel in a for car which symbolises another working class family. This character is associated with sporty clothes, he is wearing a baseball jacket and trainers when he arrives to the detention.

The Basket Case
This conventional character is also dropped off in a working class car however we do not see any conversation between her and her parents in the car. She tries talking to the person in the car but they drive off leaving her behind. This emphasises that they don't care about her and her school. The opening scene suggests that she isn't very confident of herself as she is walking with her head looking at the ground. She appears last out of the 5 characters walking into the detention which depicts that she isn't very important compared to the Princess & Criminal.

The Criminal

This character is symbolised as the Criminal in the movie The Breakfast Club. He is very different to the other characters because he walks to school unlike the other characters who arrives in a car. He is alone which suggests that no one cares about him and what he does. When he arrives he walks in front of the car that the basket case is travelling in. This shows that he is quite brave and does what he thinks is right and not what others think. His bold/brave personality that is portrayed in the opening scene makes the audience understand the name he is given 'The Criminal'.

Own Film Transport

In our own film we will distinguish the difference between the characters through their arrival and which transport type they use when coming to high school.

The Jock may arrive with a group of friends by feet. This will show that he has many friends and is never alone. They most likely have common interests which is why they hang around together most of the time.

The nerd could arrive to school with a bike which suggests that he doesn't care about class and status and he is only focused on his school.

The rich/perfect girl will arrive in a nice car which will attract everyone's attention. This will show that she is an important character and that she's well off. Her status will depict the spoilt characters values and beliefs.
